  • Duration: 3–4 years  ·  Funding: full funding available for qualified candidates  ·  Location: Edinburgh, UK  ·  Deadline: rolling admission

PhD in Operating Systems

Join us to work on next-generation operating systems for heterogeneous computing environments — resource management, scheduling, and system-level optimization.

  • Requirements: MSc in Computer Science or a related field; strong systems programming; familiarity with Linux kernel development; experience with C/C++.
  • Duration: 3–4 years  ·  Funding: full funding available for qualified candidates  ·  Location: Edinburgh, UK  ·  Deadline: rolling admission

Postdoctoral Researcher in Systems Software

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to join our systems software team, working on operating systems, virtualization, and heterogeneous computing.

  • Requirements: PhD in Computer Science or a related field; strong publication record; experience with systems software development.
  • Duration: 2 years (with possibility of extension)  ·  Location: Edinburgh, UK  ·  Deadline: open until filled

Visiting Researcher

We welcome visiting researchers interested in collaborating on systems software, quantum computing, or heterogeneous computing.

  • Requirements: current PhD student or researcher; a research proposal aligned with group interests; support from your home institution.

How to apply

  1. Prepare your documents — a detailed CV; optionally a motivation letter and reference letters.
  2. Contact us — email Dr. Antonio Barbalace at antonio.barbalace@ed.ac.uk with your application materials.
  3. Interview — selected candidates will be invited for interviews to discuss research interests and opportunities.

Student projects

We also offer projects for undergraduate students (operating systems development, quantum computing systems, system-level software development) and MSc students (advanced operating system concepts, quantum circuit optimization, heterogeneous computing systems). Projects can be part of your coursework or summer research, and can lead to publication opportunities. To discuss possibilities, email antonio.barbalace@ed.ac.uk.
